21 三月 2024

On March 15 took place the webinar ‘Pirates of Suez’ and the Impacts on the Mediterranean Supply Chain’ held by the Logistics Working Group (LWG) of the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce (CICC).

The Founder and Executive Director of InsiderChina and coordinator of the CICC LWG, Vincenzo Morano kindly welcomed the participants and briefly introduced the Logistics Working group and its activities.

Then, moderator Andrea De Sio, China Headquarter GM - Asia Pacific Coordinator at GF Logistic China LTD - Gallozzi Group, gave the stage to the first speaker, Danilo Sergi Alampi, General Manager, Shanghai Capital Logistic Transport Co. Ltd, Sisam Group, who touched on the first topic on the agenda, namely the impact of the Red Sea tensions on ocean freight and strategies for shippers. He provided a complete overview on the matter underlining how the new developments and the shipping deviations through the Cape of Good Hope are important factors to consider when developing a strategy. According to him, the key elements are to plan, invest in insurance and consult experts.

On the same topic, Michele Zaccaria, General Manager of Salerno Container Terminal, intervened bringing important insights on the future developments for the ports of South Italy, especially after the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Currently, even if travel times and freight costs increase, the effects on Italian ports are not disruptive. Similarly, in the future, it is expected not to have a significant impact in terms of loss of traffic on the China-Mediterranean Sea route.

The last part of this talk, overseen by Giuseppe Buganè, Co-Managing Director, Furlog Srl, was dedicated to the illustration of the usage of trains as an alternative transport amid this situation and a report on the tightened rules in the control of the hs-code and new package sanctions to Russia. The speaker underlined the importance of performing accurate risk assessments and diversifying the transportation system in the supply chain.

The CICC would like to thank the Logistics Working Group and the speakers for the collaboration and the audience for actively participating in this event.
