Introduction: Innovation ecosystems vary enormously from one country to another. China, after making innovation a strategic priority for its economic development, continues to open up its market and to reinforce its technological innovation capabilities through increasing investment in talents and technologies. In Italy, COVID-19 affected its social and economic system that already suffered long-term structural problems. However, the country can count on being the world’s 7th largest manufacturing economy, with a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem mainly made by dynamic SMEs. The post-pandemic era is also offering Italy an opportunity to structurally reorient public and private investments to further drive innovation and economic growth.
