Europe - China Relations: Long Term Dynamics and Current Perspectives

Speaker:

His current research interest is focused on the role of Europe in Globalization, and more particularly on the dynamics of EU-China relations. Theme:

From a historical perspective, relations between Europe and China have evolved from colonialism to the present reality of intensive trade and political cooperation in a very large number of areas. Both the EU and China are increasingly perceived as key players in globalization. The Olympics in Beijing have attracted tremendous attention on China worldwide. While international public awareness of social realities in China have increased on that occasion, European public opinions also realized that "Chinese Characteristics" in approaching a number of issues are significant, and more importantly likely to persist as such in a foreseable future. The meeting addresses to the development of Europe-China relations since the foundations of the PRC, and explores the position of China among other Asian countries in European diplomaties. It also identifies the origins of political tensions revealed in 2008, and reviews the main issues on the agenda of EU-China relations in the context of the global financial crisis.
