How to introduce yourself with an effective CV - Gi Group

07 Settembre 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

CICC is glad to share with you an article of its Member Gi Group.

The post-Covid work scenario is not very encouraging but, like any crisis, it is a time of great opportunity for those who know how to make the most out of any situation. This particular historical period is accelerating change in the corporate world, new jobs and skills have and will emerge and those who have been able to demonstrate that they have great adaptability, proactivity and determination will prevail.

For those who are about to take their first steps in the corporate world or for those who are facing a professional change it is important to be up-to-date and prepared, to have an effective resume and a professional presence online.

Here are our tips to present yourself best with a great CV and be ready for new opportunities.

Your resume needs to be clear and easy to read, tailored to the job requirements you're opting for and the type of business you're targeting. The font must be readable and present on major operating systems.

The personal data section with the following information is essential:

  • First and Last name
  • Location and Date of Birth
  • Citizenship
  • Residence and domicile (if different)
  • Mobile Phone
  • E-mail
  • Skype contact and LinkedIn

If you already have experience add your title under your name to give an immediate idea of your professional position. Be sure that your contacts are easy to reach in the country you are applying in and make your current location clear. Can be helpful to add a short introduction (summary) to highlight experiences, objectives and specializations; some companies may like this, but is not recommended when applying for recruitment companies and Head Hunters.

Education and training qualifications must be listed according to the degree of importance, remembering to always indicate the start and end date for each one. This section should then include internships and post-school training courses.

Work experience should normally be listed in chronological order from the most recent, but the resume must be customized depending on our target so you can decide to organize experiences for functions/roles/areas of expertise. This allows you to emphasize more on the skills acquired in relation to the profile for which you are applying. Using bullet points help you to save space and to make your resume easier to read: you can start the job description with one or two lines of general introduction of your function, then continue with the bullets. Recent graduates who have no experience at structured companies or offices can include in this section any occasional collaborations such as promoting or hostess activities at fairs, private tutoring, etc. These experiences also give important information, like for example about your ability to organize time.

In the language and professional skills section, flanked by the degree of knowledge, it is also useful to include any certifications or related experiences.

Finally, it is important to include a personal interests section on your CV. This allows the recruiter to get a more complete idea of the candidate.

Now let’s see the most common mistakes to avoid when writing a resume:

  • Avoid time gaps between one or more professional experience(s). If this happens, explain the cause(s) (cover/motivation letter to justify the gap year).
  • Never report false information.
  • Don't make grammatical/keystroke errors.
  • Do not attach documents, certifications and photographs if not required.
  • Respect the history.

Keeping what has already been said for profiles of those who are in search for work, there are differences, some even substantial, compared to the resume of professionals. Having already had work experience, consistency must be kept between the different stages of your career. For this purpose there are types of resume that you can use depending on the characteristics of your work experience:

  • The functional resume is used sporadically and is recommended for profiles that have held different and diverse roles that can be better expressed with their function(s) than companies and job titles.
  • The chronological resume is recommended for those who want to highlight both the training path, the experiences gained and is therefore recommended to those who have a reduced company seniority.
  • The unchronological resume is the most widespread and is recommended for people with more linear professional careers in a work or function with increasingly responsibilities.

In any case and at any professional level always remember to highlight your achievements and the skills acquired.

Now you are ready to express your professional profile and embrace greater opportunities of the new corporate world.
