CICC meets Confindustria Emilia Centro to discuss business in China

01 八月 2022

Dear Members & Friends,

On July 28th, China-Italy Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with Confindustria Emilia Area Centro, held a dialogue on “Potential scenarios for Italian companies in China” (Possibili scenari per le imprese italiane in Cina).

The roundtable was specifically held to provide the opportunity for H.E. Luca Ferrari, Ambassador of Italy to the P.R.C. and Paolo Bazzoni, CICC Chairman, to meet – at the presence of Valter Caiumi, President of Confindustria Emilia Area Centro and of Sonia Bonfiglioli, President of Bonfiglioli Group - around 50 companies located in Bologna, Ferrara and Modena, an area known for its world-class products and development processes and home to historical companies in the industrial, motor and agrifood industries.

The meeting provided an opportunity for discussion and dialogue with local Italian companies on scenarios, trends, risks and opportunities that companies operating in and with China are facing in this time of complexity and uncertainty.

Following the initial remarks of Valter Caiumi, Ambassador Ferrari covered in his speech three main areas: the weight and importance for Italy of the economic partnership with China, Chinese market trends and economic challenges that China will face in the mid and long term. On the latter, Ambassador Ferrari highlighted that the demographic issue, the challenges posed by energy transition, the increase in consumption and the problem of mobility will influence the development of the Chinese economy in the coming years.

CICC Chairman, Paolo Bazzoni, followed up by presenting the results from the 3rd issue of CICC’s Report on “Current and Forecasted Impact of the COVID Restrictions on the Italian Business Community in China”, highlighting the need for caution, resilience and innovation to protect and relaunch Italian companies and investments in China. According to the results, even though challenges persist, China remains an important market to invest in. Nevertheless, some of the Italian enterprises are revising their strategy in the ASEAN region considering its potential benefits and future development (to access the report, click here).

Sonia Bonfiglioli, President of Bonfiglioli Group, shared with the public the experience of her leading globalized group in China and Asia. The high potential of the Chinese market remains, despite of some contingent slowdown and uncertainties. Italian know-how and expertise still thrive, but the unpredictability of the current situation reflects the doubts of Italian companies with operations in the Country.

Mrs Bonfiglioli’ s remarks stimulated a highly participated discussion among the audience, which lasted for almost an hour, touching a variety of topics, from the threat of technology transfer to the Zero-Covid policy and its consequences, from the impact of the current Russia-Ukraine war on business in China to the challenges the supply-chain system still faces today in the Country.

A networking followed the seminar, during which companies and speakers could further interact.
