The survey, conducted during the period May-June 2019 on a sample of 206 Members of the business community, was carried out by CICC in collaboration with the strategic consulting firm In3Act with the main purpose of deepening the knowledge on the Sino-Italian business community and investigating its approach towards the future. From the survey, it emerged that despite a growth slowdown with respect to the previous year, the companies recorded increasing gross profit margins. E-commerce still represents a marginal component of the turnover of Italian companies, in spite of the spiking importance of the sector in China. While only one fourth reports a violation, half of the companies analyzed believes that IP rights in China are at risk. Three out of four say they do not have a center for R&D in China with obvious consequences on the number of patents and utility models registered with local authorities.

After the presentation, a panel discussion was held by six authoritative speakers:

  • Massimo Bagnasco, Vice President in EUCCC and Partner and Managing Director of Progetto CMR;
  • Sergio Bertasi, Chief Representative Officer of Intesa Sanpaolo in Beijing;
  • Davide Cucino, CICC Chairman;
  • Antonio Farese, GM at CEMAS Welding Technology and CEO of Shanghai MEC Industries Services;
  • Guido Giacconi, CICC Vice-Chairman and Chairman of In3act;
  • Francesco Lorenzini, Founder and Managing Director China at Tech Silu and CICC Vice Coordinator IDTWG.

During the panel discussion and the Q&A, the speakers and the audience shared their opinions regarding the perception of Italian companies towards the two main economic projects launched by the Chinese government: the Made in China 2025 and the Belt and Road Initiative. Furthermore, the China-USA trade war and its negative effects on a global level were taken into consideration. Despite this, the relevance of the Chinese market as 'the place to be' for Italian companies was remarked.

In the second part of the event, the Italian Cultural Institute Director, Franco Amadei, presented an extensive program of cultural activities between Italy and China, that will be organized for year 2020.

The China-Italy Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the speakers and all the participants who joined the event.

Kind Regards,

CICC Team.
